Route 1: A tub and ice (the cheapest start)
Fill an insulated tub — or a stock tank, or a sturdy inflatable — with cold water and add bagged ice. This is the lowest-cost cold plunge there is, and a completely legitimate way to begin. The cost is not in the build; it is in the ice, which you buy for every session, forever, plus the chore of hauling and dumping it. The one spec that matters even here is insulation. An insulated tub holds the cold far longer, so you buy less ice per session — and it is the same spec that lets you add a chiller cheaply later. Buy the insulated tub up front and the whole upgrade path stays cheap; buy the cheapest uninsulated tub and you pay for it in ice now and in running cost later.
Route 2: A tub plus a chiller (the real thing)
Add a standalone chiller to an insulated tub and you have a genuine cold plunge: set a temperature, and it is ready whenever you are, with no ice to buy. This is the DIY route that most resembles a bought kit, because it essentially is one — the same two components, chosen by you instead of matched by a manufacturer.
Be honest about the arithmetic before assuming DIY is cheaper. If you go this route, plan to insulate the outside and add a cover, because bare metal or plastic in the open air is the worst case for both ice consumption and chiller running cost.
