The three routes, honestly

A pre-cut kit is the most common DIY route, and for good reason. The stages every build shares

Planning: size and location.Before any wood is cut, decide how many people the room needs to seat and where it will live — indoors, in a basement, in a garage, or outside. Framing. The room is framed like a small, well-built insulated box. Insulation and a vapor barrier.A sauna works by getting hot and staying hot, so the walls and ceiling are insulated to hold that heat in. Behind the interior cladding, on the warm side of the insulation, a traditional hot sauna typically gets a vapor barrier to stop the room’s moisture soaking into the insulation and framing, where over time it can cause rot and mold. Sauna-suitable wood cladding. The interior is lined with wood chosen specifically for saunas, and the wood you choose matters more than people expect. Avoid resinous or chemically treated woods:resinous species can weep sticky sap and grow hot enough to be uncomfortable against the skin, while pressure-treated or painted lumber can off-gas in the heat — not something you want to breathe in a closed hot room. Cladding and, above all, the bench boards should be a clear, non-resinous wood that stays relatively cool to the touch and shrugs off the repeated heat-and-humidity cycle. Benching.Benches are built sturdy and at the right heights, because heat rises — an upper bench is meaningfully hotter than a lower one, which is part of how a sauna lets you choose your intensity. Bench boards are left smooth and unfinished in sauna-safe wood so they do not get too hot and do not off-gas, and they are built to carry real weight without flexing.

The heater, its clearances, and the wiring

The heater is the heart of the room, and it is where planning and safety meet. Ventilation.A hot sauna needs air to move through it — fresh air in and stale, moist air out — both for comfort and to help the room and its wood dry between sessions. The placement of the intake and exhaust is usually tied to where the heater sits, so it is planned as part of the build rather than bolted on afterward. The door.A sauna door is built to seal well against heat loss while still opening easily from the inside, and it is typically kept simple and safe — no lock that could trap someone, and hardware that stays cool enough to handle.
