An upright tub is the one shape in this category that solves a problem money cannot: floor area. You sit with your knees bent and your torso vertical, so the tub occupies roughly the footprint of an armchair while still putting your shoulders under water. That is why it is the form factor people land on when the plunge has to live in a garage, on a balcony, or beside a backyard setup that already has a sauna in it.

It is also the corner of the category with the widest price spread and the least consistent documentation. Here is the finding, counted from the tubs below rather than asserted. Of the eight upright tubs compared here, two publish an actual chiller port, one publishes wall insulation, and two do not publish a capacity at all — and one of the two without a capacity is the most expensive tub on this page. How to choose an upright cold plunge

Start with whether it will hold you upright at your height, not with its capacity. Gallons tell you what it costs to chill; they do not tell you whether your shoulders go under. In an upright tub the limiting dimension is depth against your seated torso, which means a deeper tub of the same diameter suits a tall plunger better than a wider shallow one. Some listings here publish a fit height — 6 ft 9 in is the most generous, and two state 6 ft 7 in — and where none is published we leave it blank rather than inferring one. If you are near the top of those numbers, treat them as the ceiling they are.

Then decide rigid or inflatable, because that is the real fork. three of the eighttubs here are rigid, hard-walled and freestanding; the rest are folding fabric tubs, several of which are sold with the word “barrel” in the title. That is not a trick exactly — they are barrel-shaped — but a barrel shape and a barrel are different purchases. Rigid walls cannot be punctured, hold their shape when you climb in, and are the only construction here that publishes insulation. Inflatable walls fold into a bag, weigh under ten pounds, and cost a fraction as much.

Then look for a published chiller port, and treat “chiller compatible” as marketing until you find one. This is the criterion that reorders the page. A stated port — better still, a stated thread size and shut-off valves — means you plumb a closed loop and shut the lid on it. A chiller is removing heat from a volume of water, so roughly twice the volume is twice the work to pull down from ambient and twice the thermal mass to hold there against a warm afternoon. That is why the smallest upright here can be genuinely cheaper to own than the largest lie-down tub before you have compared a single sticker price, and it is the same arithmetic that makes running cost and the cost of a fill track gallons more closely than they track brand.

We are deliberately not converting that into a monthly figure on this page. Doing it honestly needs a chiller wattage, and no chiller listing we have surveyed publishes one — so the arithmetic lives on the cost pages above, where the assumption is stated in the open and you can put your own rate into it. What we will say plainly is the direction: fewer gallons is cheaper to run, every day, forever, and posture is the cheapest way to buy fewer gallons without giving up shoulder depth.

The two things none of these listings will tell you

The first is pulldown. Every card above shows “Not published” for it, and that is the honest state of the category rather than a gap in our reading. Pulldown — hours to bring a stated volume from a stated ambient to a stated target — is the one figure that would let you compare a small insulated barrel against a large uninsulated pod on equal terms. Nobody publishes it, on any tub, at any price on this page. Until someone does, capacity and insulation are the checkable proxies, which is exactly why they lead this ranking.

The second is amperage. The tub draws nothing, so the electrical question belongs to the chiller you bolt onto it — and not one chiller listing we have surveyed publishes an amp figure either. We do not print one. What we do instead is compute the circuit from published wattage, cite the code sections we could verify, and send the specifics to a licensed electrician and your local inspector. It depends entirely on whether you will still be plunging in two years, and nobody can answer that for you on the day you buy. Do any of these publish how fast they get cold?
