The sauna market has a documentation problem. Manufacturers publish seat counts and wood species enthusiastically, and the two numbers that decide whether the thing works — heater kW and the circuit it needs — inconsistently or not at all.
Of every sauna and heater listing we surveyed on 16 July 2026, exactly one published its amperage. Everyone else publishes kW and stops, leaving the buyer to discover at installation that a 6kW heater wants a dedicated circuit. So every comparison here carries the arithmetic, and the electrical guide explains where the numbers come from.
Get the electrical quote before you choose the sauna. The heater you can afford to install is a different heater from the one you want, and finding that out in the right order saves a lot of money.

Three real groups, and the word “sauna” on all three listings is doing more work than it should.
Traditional electric— a room, a heater, stones. Runs at 150–195°F depending which source you ask, makes steam when you throw water on the stones, and needs a serious circuit. This is what the Finnish research studied. Barrels and cabins are both mostly this, wearing different shapes: barrels and outdoor cabins.
Infrared— a cabin with lamps that warm you rather than the room. Runs at 110–135°F, has no stones, and draws about a third of what a traditional heater does. It is not a cheaper version of a traditional sauna; it is a different machine, and the evidence cannot currently tell you which is better. The indoor cabins are compared on wattage and outlet draw here. Buying for two? The two-person saunas — indoor infrared, outdoor infrared and cedar barrels are pulled out separately.
Heaters sold on their own— for a room you already have or are building. This is where the specs are best, because a heater has nothing to hide behind. Six electric heaters compared, and the wood-burning stoves — the one heater that needs no circuit — compared separately. Not sure what size you need? Size it by room volume.
And sauna blankets— a heated wrap you lie inside, with no room, no stones and no circuit to worry about. It is the one branch of this category where the electrical question disappears entirely and the documentation gets worse instead: not one listing we surveyed publishes a wattage. And portable saunas— a fold-away fabric tent with an electric steam generator, or one dry hot-air pod, that stores in a cupboard and plugs into a standard 120V outlet. The cheapest way into heat and the one branch with no electrician involved — the catch is that a tent you cannot stand up in is a different product from one you can. Six compared on wattage, temperature and assembled height.
What actually drives the price
The heater’s kW, and then your panel.Everything else on a barrel listing — the cedar, the porch, the LED strip, the Wi-Fi control panel — is cladding around a heater. The kW decides the temperature the room reaches, the circuit it needs, and the running cost for as long as you own it.
The circuit is where it gets expensive, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion. A 6kW heater draws 25.0Acontinuously, which the NEC’s 125% rule sizes to a 35A breaker. An 8kW heater draws 33.3A and wants 45A. On a 100A service, that second one is half your nameplate capacity — and it needs a circuit of its own.
The running cost is the pleasant surprise. A 6kW heater used three times a week for an hour, at the US average rate, is about $8.84a month. Saunas are expensive to install and cheap to run — the exact inverse of a cold plunge. Full arithmetic here.
The documentation vacuum

Sit with the last one. A manufacturer sells you a room with a heater in it and does not publish the room’s volume, which is the only way to check the heater matches. The rule of thumb is roughly 1kW per 50 cubic feet for an insulated room, corroborated by the fit ranges those same manufacturers publish for their standalone heaters. The mistake buyers make
Buying the biggest sauna they can fit. A 9kW heater in a room you love is worthless if your panel cannot feed it, and a service upgrade will cost more than the sauna. The constraint is electrical, it arrives last in most people’s shopping process, and it does not negotiate.
The second mistake is buying on health claims. The Finnish cohort data is the strongest evidence in this whole category and it is still observational— and its famous hazard ratios compare men who sauna 4–7 times a week against men who sauna once a week, not against people who never do. We unpacked it properly. The only consistent signal in that data is frequency, which means the sauna worth buying is the one you will actually use — not the one with the best marketing.
