An outdoor infrared sauna is the pragmatic middle of the sauna market: the backyard cabin of a traditional outdoor sauna, but with the far lighter electrical load of an indoor infrared cabin. You get a room to sit in outdoors without the 25A at 240V and 35A dedicated circuit a 6kW traditional heater demands. That is the pitch, and for a tight electrical panel it is a genuinely good one.

The catch is the same one that runs through this whole category: the listings are generous about wood and evasive about watts. There is exactly one exception here worth naming. The Albott cabin publishes 2850W / 240V / 20Aoutright — the only outdoor unit in our entire survey that states its amperage on the listing. Everyone else publishes a wattage at best, an amperage sometimes, and a voltage rarely. Where a listing gives us wattage and voltage we compute the draw and the breaker the code requires; where it does not, the table says “Not published,” because that is the truth and it is information you should have before you pour a pad.

How to choose an outdoor infrared sauna

Start with the electrical load, because it is the one thing you cannot change after the fact. An outdoor infrared cabin draws more than an indoor one of the same size — it is heating against the weather — so a 2-3kW draw is normal here rather than the 1.2-1.5kW of an indoor unit. The Albott is the only cabin that lets you plan properly: at 2850W / 240V it draws 11.9A, which the NEC’s 125% rule sizes to a 15A circuit. That is a fraction of what a 35A traditional barrel wants, but it is still a 240V run in most cases, so get the electrician’s quote before you choose the cabin. Where a listing hides the numbers, treat that as a cost you have not priced yet.

Then the footprint, because a patio is a hard constraint. A “four person” cabin is a real object that has to sit on a level pad with clearance around it, and only the LTCCDSS here publishes its exterior dimensions (73.09" x 48.66" x 83.5"). The rest make you ask the seller — which is worth doing before the crate arrives, not after. Two-person cabins like the OUTEXER and KUNSANA suit a small deck; the three- and four-person units need genuine yard.

Then the emitter type, which is a preference more than a verdict.Far infrared does the heavy lifting in every cabin. Full-spectrum units — the LTCCDSS and the SALUSHEAT — add near- and mid-infrared and usually a red-light wavelength; the KUNSANA uses ceramic emitters instead of carbon panels. All of these are legitimate hardware choices. None of them is a proven health upgrade, and the specific wavelength claims on the listings are the manufacturer’s, not ours.

Then the wood and the weatherproofing.Outdoor cabins live in the rain, so the roof and cladding matter in a way they do not indoors — the Albott publishes an asphalt-shingle roof, the LTCCDSS is Canadian hemlock, and the SALUSHEAT is a plainer “old fir.” Where a listing is silent on the roof or the wood grade, that silence is part of the picture. An outdoor sauna is only as good as its ability to shrug off weather for a decade.

What outdoor infrared can, and can’t, claim

Infrared saunas are sold on health outcomes — detox, weight loss, recovery — harder than almost anything else in this category, and the outdoor cabins are no exception. Be careful with that. The strongest sauna research is the Finnish cohort data, and it studied traditional saunas at 150-195°F, so it does not transfer wholesale to a far-infrared cabin running much cooler. Buy an outdoor infrared sauna because you will actually use a warm, low-fuss cabin that fits your yard and your panel — not because a listing promised a clinical result.

The running cost, at least, is arithmetic rather than a claim, and it is a pleasant one. A ~2,400W outdoor cabin used four 40-minute sessions a week costs about $4.19 a month at the EIA national average of 18.83 cents/kWh, assuming the panels run about 80% of each session — a stated assumption you can change. Full cost method, at your own rate. It costs more to run than an indoor infrared cabin and far less than a 6kW traditional sauna — the outdoors is what you are paying the extra watts for.

What's the difference between an outdoor infrared sauna and a traditional outdoor sauna?

They share the word 'sauna' and almost nothing else. A traditional outdoor sauna — a barrel or a cabin with an electric or wood heater and stones — heats the air to 150-195°F and makes steam when you throw water. An outdoor infrared cabin skips the hot air and warms your body directly at a much lower air temperature, with no stones and no steam. Infrared is the lighter load — but it is a different experience, not a cheaper version of a steam sauna.

Do outdoor infrared saunas need a dedicated 240V circuit?

It depends on the cabin, and most listings will not tell you outright. Larger outdoor infrared cabins commonly run on 240V and draw enough to want their own circuit; the Albott here is the honest example, publishing 2850W / 240V / 20A. Several of the others publish a wattage or an amperage but not a voltage, and two publish neither — which is exactly why the table says 'Not published' rather than guessing. Can an infrared sauna really live outdoors year-round?

Only if it is built for it, which is the whole point of buying an outdoor-rated cabin rather than moving an indoor one outside. The cabins here add weatherproofing an indoor unit does not have — the Albott, for instance, publishes an asphalt-shingle roof. Even so, an outdoor cabin in a cold climate takes longer to warm and asks more of its heater, because it is fighting the ambient temperature the entire session. Full spectrum, far infrared or ceramic — does the emitter type matter?

A little, and less than the marketing implies. Far infrared does the bulk of the heating in every cabin on the market; full-spectrum units (the LTCCDSS and SALUSHEAT here) add near- and mid-infrared emitters and usually a named red-light wavelength, and the KUNSANA uses ceramic emitters instead of carbon panels. These are real hardware differences and a legitimate preference. What they are not is a settled health advantage — the specific claims attached to particular wavelengths are the manufacturer's, and we do not repeat them as fact.

How much does an outdoor infrared sauna cost to run?

Less than a traditional sauna, more than an indoor infrared cabin.
