A cold plunge is a small volume of water that warm, sweaty people get into repeatedly, and then leave to sit. That is a recipe for cloudy water, smell and eventually algae if you do nothing. The single most common misconception is that the cold takes care of it — it does not. Cold water slows biological growth; it does not sterilise, and every tub warms up between sessions, which is exactly when the trouble starts.
The good news is that keeping a plunge clear is a short, repeatable routine with four parts: filter what you can see, treat what you cannot, keep it covered, and change the water when the routine can no longer keep up. None of it requires guesswork — and where the honest answer is “it depends on your setup,” we say so rather than invent a number.
The routine, in four parts
1. Filter what you can see.Hair, skin, dust and body oils are what turn water cloudy, and they are also food for everything you do not want growing. A filter — the chiller’s built-in one, or a standalone submersible filter — removes the particulate so the water stays clear and the treatment has less to fight. Keep the filter itself clean; a clogged filter quietly stops working.
2. Treat what you cannot see. A sanitiser handles the bacteria and early algae that a filter cannot. The catch, which we document in detail on the water treatment roundup, is that most cold-plunge-branded bottles will not name their active ingredient or publish a concentration — and a chemistry you cannot name is one you cannot dose or test. Favour a treatment that tells you what is in it and at what strength, and pair it with test strips so you are dosing to a reading, not a hope.
3. Keep it covered.A cover keeps out light, leaves, dust and warmth — light and warmth being exactly what algae needs. A cover also slows the water warming up between sessions, which both keeps growth down and, on a chilled tub, cuts the running cost. 4. Change the water when the routine falls behind.No filter-and-treat routine lasts forever. When the water stops responding — persistent cloudiness, a smell that will not clear, a slick feel on the surfaces — drain it and start fresh. Troubleshooting: what the water is telling you

Green water is algae, which needs light, warmth and time. It is a covering-and-treatment problem: keep the tub covered and out of direct light, keep a sanitiser residual, and if it has taken hold, drain, clean the surfaces and refill rather than trying to rescue it.
A smell— musty or sulphurous — means biological activity or biofilm on the surfaces the water touches. Drain, wipe down the walls and any hoses, clean or replace the filter, and refill. Biofilm is why wiping the surfaces matters; a fresh fill into a dirty tub goes off again fast.
A slick, slippery feel on the tub walls is early biofilm. It is the sign to clean the surfaces, not just swap the water. Cold water hides how much of this is developing, which is why a scheduled wipe-down beats waiting for a problem you can smell.

How do I look after the chiller and the tub themselves?
