Sauna not getting hot enough?

Before you blame the heater: it is usually the room, or the clock. Here is how to find the real cause, from most common to least.

A sauna reaches temperature only when the heater puts out heat faster than the room loses it. When it will not get hot, the culprit is almost always one side of that balance being off — a heater too small, a room too leaky, or not enough preheat time — and hardly ever a broken heater.

Work down this list from the most common cause to the least, and check the room and the supply before you suspect the hardware. Most people find the answer in the first two or three items.

1. The heater is too small for the room

This is the number-one cause, and it is a sizing mistake rather than a fault. Every heater is rated for a range of room volumes, and a room above that range will never get properly hot no matter how long it runs. The heater is doing all it can — it is simply outmatched by the cubic footage.

Check your actual room volume against the heater’s rated range using the sizing rule and the heater size calculator. If you are at or above the top of the range, the lasting fix is a bigger heater — and you can compare heaters on exactly that rated volume.

2. The room leaks heat

A room with a lot of glass, thin or uninsulated walls, or a big gap under the door bleeds heat as fast as the heater makes it. This is why the sizing rules add a penalty for glass and poor insulation: in heating terms, a leaky room behaves like a much bigger one, so a heater that would be fine for the raw volume falls short.

Tighten what you can — insulation, a proper sauna door with a good seal, less exposed glass — and re-run the sizing with the glass-and-insulation penalty applied. Often the heater is the right size for the box and the wrong size for the box’s heat loss, and closing that gap is cheaper than a new heater.

3. You are not preheating long enough

The simplest and most overlooked cause. A traditional electric sauna needs a real preheat — often around 30–45 minutes, and longer in a cold room or an outdoor sauna in winter — before it reaches temperature. If you are climbing in early and finding it cool, the fix may be nothing more than patience. Give it a full preheat before you conclude anything is wrong.

4. Ventilation and stones

Ventilation.A sauna needs some airflow to work, but too much — an oversized vent left wide open, or big uncontrolled gaps — dumps the heat you are making. Follow the heater manufacturer’s ventilation guidance rather than sealing the room completely or leaving it wide open.

Stones. A traditional heater needs the right amount of heater-rated stones, loaded loosely so air moves between them. Too few, too many, packed too tight, or crumbling stones all hurt performance. Sort the stones out — but if the room is barely warming at all, size and heat loss come first; stones fine-tune a working sauna.

5. The electrical supply — then the heater

An electric heater only delivers its rated output at its rated voltage on a correctly sized circuit. Low voltage, an undersized breaker or wire, a loose connection, or a heater wired for the wrong voltage all leave it running below full power. If everything above checks out, have an electrician confirm the supply voltage and that the circuit matches the heater’s requirements — this is not a DIY guess with 240V.

Only after the room is sized right, reasonably tight, fully preheated, correctly ventilated, and confirmed to have proper power should you suspect the heater itself — a failing element, a bad thermostat, a control fault. That is a warranty conversation, and it belongs last, because most saunas that “won’t get hot” are simply undersized for the room they are in.

If your stones are missing, sparse, crumbling or jammed in solid, sort that out. But if the room is barely warming at all, look at heater size and heat loss first; stones fine-tune a working sauna rather than rescue an undersized one.

When is the heater actually faulty?

After you have ruled out the room and the supply. If the heater is correctly sized for the room, the room is reasonably tight and insulated, you have given it a full preheat, the ventilation is right and an electrician has confirmed the voltage and circuit - and it still will not reach temperature - then you may have a failing element, a bad thermostat or a control fault. At that point it is a manufacturer-and-warranty matter. Reach it last, because most saunas that 'won't get hot' are asking a small heater to do a big room's job.
